Why Almonds Are Not Only A Superfood, But A Power House Ingredient For Our Hair

Who knew that one little nut could come with so much power. We already know the amazing benefits of almond oil for the skin: it is moisturising and soothes irritation. But what about almond oil for our hair?

National Almond Day is upon us and we thought it would be great to share with you all the information about this wonderful superfood and why it is a popular ingredient for our curls and a star ingredient in our Style Me range.

Nuts About Almonds

Almonds are one of the most nutrient-rich nuts available. They are among the best non-dairy sources of calcium and are high in protein, Vitamin E, fibre, minerals and heart healthy fats.

In a handful of almonds, there are 6 grams of protein, 3.5 grams of fibre and 75mg of calcium. This makes this oval shaped little nut a powerful one, with the highest amount of protein in a nut.

Did you know that almonds are 100% reliant on wild bees and honey bees for crop pollination. This means if there are no bees, then there are no almonds.

Fun Fact
Almonds originated in the southwestern parts of Asia and China, and were most likely cultivated there. Scientists have been able to point to Western Asia as the most likely place they were first grown.

The Beauty in Almond Oil

Almond Oil is a common ingredient used in cosmetics and personal care.
Containing a number of rich omega fatty acids including oleic, linoleic and palmitic acids, it also contains a-tocopherol, polyphenols, squalene, vitamins and minerals. Because of its emollient effects, it is highly used in the cosmetic industry due to its benefits to the hair and skin.

There are various ways to extract this well loved oil due to its versatility and availability. As a tradition, a mechanical press is applied to extract the oil. However, due to newer technologies available, these new practices are considered more sustainable such as supercritical fluid extraction.

Benefits Of Almond Oil For Our Hair

There are many great benefits that give Almond Oil the spotlight it deserves.
When applied to the hair, almond oil helps strengthen, soften, hydrate and smooth the hair texture, making it the do-it-all oil your hair routine has been missing.

It is also great for:

  • Conditioning and moisturising dry hair
  • Improving scalp health
  • Preventing hair breakage
  • Hydrates dry, dull hair and
  • Smells beautiful!

If you weren't already aware, our hair is made up of keratin which is a protein. It helps to strengthen and repair our hair strands while giving our curls structure and helping them to grow. Made up of keratin cells and amino acids, keratin is the major building block of our hair strands. Nourishing your body from the inside out with protein rich foods will ensure your hair, skin and nails stay strong and healthy.

Fun Fact
Did you know that peaches are related to almonds. I bet you didn’t know that one. The same as apricots and cherries, peaches are all part of the prunus family.

Almonds are referred to as prunus dulcis and peaches are referred to as prunus persica. The next time you eat a peach, notice that the pit resembles an almond.
